The Addiction to Social Media

by Jubilee Lettieri

For the past 43 years, the majority of phones has evolved. Skip forward 43 years and now every single app you can imagine is available. From games, to social media, to fashion,to food. That’s how people stay connected these day, but most parents get frustrated at their kids, or at other people because they think they don’t see enough of  the world around them.

On the subject of social media, there are many different kinds, Instagram, snapchat, tumblr, and Facebook. That’s what many people are so attached to! They are on it walking down the street, in their own home, and even at the dinner table.  I’m not on a specific side. I’m not against it nor all for it. I have social media and it’s great to stay connected but there are some safety problems.

On Instagram, people you don’t know can follow you. But there is an option to make your account private. People will have to request to follow you and you get to see some information on who they are,so you can also ignore or accept their request. There also could be stalkers on social media. People you don’t know could be people that know you. You have to be careful on who follows you and who you follow. You never know what can happen, people can find out where you are.

Snapchat is a type of social media involving photography.  You send a photo or video to one of your friends, and can add a caption. The viewing time can last from 1 second to 10 seconds. You can only see that picture or video one time, but there is a replay option to replay the content one more time. You can also send a picture or video to your story which lasts for 24 hours. Your story sends that content to all the people you’ve “added” or in other words, the people in your snapchat contacts.

From all the updates, everyone’s favorite has been the filters. You can be a dog, swap faces (which is a new feature everyone is crazy about), make your mouth and nose bigger, and the most famous, the barfing rainbow. There are many more and they add more over time.

Social media has its pros and cons. It can be great for so many reasons. For example, to stay connected with friends and family, but it does have its cons. As a reminder, be careful when using social media, you never know what can happen.
