During the school year, SBJHS has two theatrical productions. One occurs in the fall and one occurs in the spring. They are both directed by the animated, energetic Mr. Lashua, and for the fall play, he needs your help!
The upcoming production is called, Much Ado Out West. It’s a spoof of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, a comedy. Much Ado About Nothing is about Claude and Hero, an engaged couple, and Don Pedro, who try to help their friends fall in love. This proves a tricky task, considering their friends Beatrice and Benedick completely despise one another. Meanwhile, a man named Don John plans to break up Claudio and Hero’s wedding.
Much Ado Out West, according to epc-library.com, is about a man named Claude who “… falls head over heels in love with Winny, a lovely Southern belle, new to the ranch. And in the midst of it all, Calamity Jane, a rambunctious tomboy, secretly longs for Claude’s affections and is bent on stirring up a big bowl of trouble when she doesn’t get her way. Meanwhile, Benny and Betty are arch-rivals, only happy when they are insulting each other… or is it just their way of masking their deep regarded feelings for one another?”
When I asked Mr. Lashua why he chose this play, he replied: “ I selected it because it was funny and easy for audiences to understand. It still keeps the basic plot line of Much Ado About Nothing which is one of my favorite Shakespearean comedies, and it’s also a Western, which is a lot of fun to play with as a director.”
Being a part of the play is, of course, a great experience. I talked to Emerson McCafferty-Cable, who was part of last year’s spring and fall productions, said “It was really fun, and when I started off I wasn’t the greatest actor but each play I have become better and better.”
So come out and join the cast of this must see production, Much Ado Out West! The rehearsals are during seventh period, but instead of ending at 3:14 they end at 4. As the performance draws closer, rehearsal times will be increased to up to 6PM. Students are required to attend mandatory tech rehearsals on November 9th and 10th. Much Ado Out West will be performed twice; on November 16th and 17th. Afterwards, there will still be seventh period, but it will only go until 3:14.
Auditions are on Thursday, September 1st. Sign up sheets, sides and audition forms are posted in front of Mr. Lashua’s room, 127. If you’re even the slightest bit interested, I urge you to try out because the play is really an amazing experience! Being a former student of Mr. Lashua’s, I can tell you that if you do decide to join, it will be something you will never forget. We hope to see you on Thursday!
