Film Festival Preview

Starting January 31st, the 33rd edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival will last until February 10th. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival shows various movies and stars various actors and actresses. Here is all the information that we know so far.
SBIFF is going to start with a film called, “The Public”. This film stars Emilio Estevez, Alec Baldwin, Jena Malone, Christian Slater, Taylor Schilling, Che ‘Rhymefest’ Smith, Gabrielle Union, Jacob Vargas, Michael K. Williams, and Jeffery Wright. The film is directed by Emilio Estevez.
On February 1st, the film festival will be giving Willem Dafoe the Cinema Vanguard award for his performance in The Florida Project. On February 2nd, the film festival will also be awarding the Maltin Modern Master award to Golden Globe winner, Gary Oldman. On February 4th, Golden Globe winner, Saoirse Ronan will be receiving the Santa Barbara Award for her exciting take on her new role in “Lady Bird”. Golden Globe winner, Sam Rockwel, will also be awarded with the American Riviera Award for his moving performance in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. These awards will be given out at the Arlington Theatre.
On February 5th, the Variety Artisans Award will be taken place at the Lobero Theatre and moderated by Tim Gray. The honorees are still waiting to be announced.
On February 6th, the Outstanding Directors of the Year Awards will be given out at the Arlington Theatre and sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter. The honorees are waiting to be announced.
On Closing Night, February 10th, the Virtuosos Award will be given out to 7 actors and actresses who have stood out in incredible performances throughout the last year. These actors/actresses include Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Hong Chau (Downsizing), John Boyega (Detroit), Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), Mary J. Blige (Mudbound), and Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name). This event will be held at the Arlington Theatre.
Three panels will also be held at the Lobero Theatre; the Writer’s Panel, moderated by Anne Thompson, the Producer’s Panel, moderated by Glenn Whipp, and the Women’s Panel, moderated by Madelyn Hammond. The Producer’s Panel is on February 3rd at 10 AM, the Writer’s Panel in on February 3rd at 1PM, and the Women’s Panel is on February 4th, 11AM. The panelists for these events will be posted soon.
Many of the films in the film festival are entered in a competition. The jury is a hand selected group of people that select the winners. The people in the jury are Jan Bijvoet, Geoffrey Cowper, Martin Gooch, Simon Helberg, Jesus Lloveras, Alan Marshall, Carol Marshall, Marc Meyers, Josè Novoa, Artie Schmidt, Leslie Zemeckis, Anthony Zerbe, and Arnette Zerbe.
Another event that is part of the film festival is Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies. 4,000 students from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade all over Santa Barbara county get the chance to take a field trip to the Arlington theatre and watch a movie for free. This year the movie that will be showing is Disney Pixar’s Coco. After the movie, the kids will participate in a Q&A with Adrian Molina, the co-director of Coco. The students will also get to learn about the art of animated film making.
