Ingenious Actress Carey Mulligan Will Receive the Vanguard Cinema Award at the 36th Annual Santa Barbara Film Festival

By Clara Watson

Carey Hannah Mulligan is a British actress. She was born on May 28, 1995 in Westminster London, England. She discovered her spark for acting in a school production of “Sweet Charity” at Woldingham School. Her breakout role was all the way back in 2009, starring in The Education. This dramatic romance tale is based on a true story, and follows an intelligent teenage girl in the 1960’s swooned by a much older man. After starring in this movie Carey Mulligan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role as well as winning Best Breakout Performance. Carey Mulligan went on to have a dazzling career starring in a wide array of movies. Each role she brought rich dimensions to her characters and went on to receive many more nominations and awards. Some of her other notable movies include: Inside Llewyn Davis, Shame, the Great Gasby, and her latest hit Promising Young Woman.

Carey Mulligan will receive the Cinema Vanguard Award at the 36th annual Santa Barbara Film Festival. Vanguard is defined as people blazing the way in new ideas and developments. This award is a perfect fit for the ultimate thriller and physiological immersive movie Carey Mulligan starred in this year. Carey Mulligan played the lead protagonist in the hit boundary crushing movie, Promising Young Woman. Sadly the movie is rated R, so I’m not allowed to watch it, but after reading countless reviews I can tell this movie is really something else. The film synopsis reads, “Nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be, she’s wickedly smart, tantalizing cunning, and she’s living a double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs from the past.”

Even from just viewing the trailer, you can tell how much the colors and lighting embellish and enrich the atmosphere of this movie. Director Emerald Fennell masterfully balances the poppy and vibrant aesthetic of a romantic comedy with disturbingly dark undertones and issues. Every single review I read on this movie wouldn’t stop raving about how much Mrs. Mulligan’s scintillating range of acting allowed the movie to achieve “sheer brilliance”.  Being tagged online as thought provoking, dark, unsettling, and captivating this movie is sure to stick with you, and uproot many conversations and discussion about rape culture. Many proclaimed and celebrated film critics write how this may be Carey Mulligan’s best and most immersive role yet.

Mrs. Mulligans deserves this award greatly, and offered people around the world a much needed taste of unwavering talent. Congratulations Carey Hannah Mulligan for winning the prestigious Vanguard Cinema award at the 36th annual Santa Barbara Film Festival. Your willingness to trailblaze new levels of roles through your outstanding acting career is not an inspiration to just people working in the film industry but to everyone.
